review 1: “Life was much safer when I only cared about myself.”—GenGen’s been running away, and now she’s caught. Blackmailed. OK, fine, so she was living aimlessly in Paris on her parents’ credit cards while trying to forget the humiliation of a cheating fiancé, and now her parents have cut her access to her trust fund until she can show them she’s responsible. Still, blackmail is blackmail! And to top it off, she had to go get in a bar fight while fuming over her parents’ ultimatum and score a community service sentence along with sexy war hero, Dylan. Maybe, the one thing Gen really needs has been in the place she’s been running away from…“I’m damaged, Gen. Not just the outside. The whole package.”—DylanThis is such a sweet, romantic (low-heat and cle... morean), and entertaining read! I ended up loving this book, which was a complete surprise since I hadn’t been sure I even wanted to keep reading after the first chapter! Once I got into the story and understood Gen a bit more, I didn’t want to put the book down, and I was absolutely rooting for her throughout the rest of the story as she faces her past, figures out who she is in the present, and fight for her future!OK, first off, Gen is a spoiled, shallow, and self-centered person. And she realizes it. And doesn’t like it. So, Gen’s off to make herself a better person, actively trying to be less spoiled, shallow, and self-centered, even if it means facing the people she was an utter jerk to. Talk about needing courage, huh? It turns out, under that privileged shell she shows the world is a genuinely caring sweetheart who wants to help people. Trouble is finding that person. Recognizing one’s flaws is never fun, and I loved that Gen was willing to do so.And then there’s Dylan. Gorgeous and damaged Dylan. He’s a returning soldier who was badly injured in an ambush while serving one of his many tours in Afghanistan. Minus a hand and an eye, he focuses on what’s missing, instead of what he has. So, yeah, brooding war hero who thinks he’s too damaged to love…just go ahead and buy the book on this alone. How can you not already love this guy from that alone? Reading about his struggles was heart-breaking, and I loved that Gen was able to make him feel a bit like the old Dylan. Coupled with his large and loving family, wannabee hermit Dylan never has a chance to give up.The characterization in the story is fantastic, and it’s hard not to love the two leads and their friends and family. I was crying in so many places with how sweet and heartbreaking the story is—and I still can’t believe I almost didn’t give it a chance at the start! One complaint is that although the ending was lovely, it just ended! I wish there was an epilogue to see them in the future since they still have so many challenges left for them in their lives, and I wanted some more closure. My guess is that since this is a series, we’ll find that in later books.Overall, this is a great read with wonderful Christmas cheer—a 5 out of 5 for me!(Originally posted on my blog; I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.)
review 2: This book had two complicated main characters, Gen and Dylan, who get in a bar fight and have to perform community service together. Dylan has lost a hand and an eye in the war and hadn't wanted to volunteer to help other wounded warriors and their families have a recreation vacation. Gen had left Hope's Crossing after her fiancé cheated on her and now her dad has cut off her money until she fixes up a house. They are forced to work together and are changed by the experience. less
