review 1: On the surface, this is a relentlessly negative and depressing portrait of an immigrant to North America and of his participation in the underside of life here, as a taxi driver in a large city. Everything he knows or discovers has been either discredited or is false, and he is left with a seemingly inescapable fatalism that I suspect is part of many immigrant's lives, whether in Canada or elsewhere.
review 2: High energy prose propels the novel through the dark city streets as Fly, narrator and taxi driver, shows the reader around the streets as he sees them--as he thinks them. The novel works so well in part because of how Fly is written, he's intelligent, raw, subversive, and at times dangerous. The prose holds nothing back and does not look to be anything
... more but bold, daring, and honest. Sublime literary novel. less
