“Written In The Stars”

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.

Altair and Vega are two of the brightest stars in the sky. They represent probably the saddest most romantic love story of all time.

Vega was a seamstress. Breathtaking and loved by everyone. She made the most beautiful garments. So beautiful in fact the Gods them self-wanted her to make clothes for them exclusively. Which she did.

Altair was a shepherd that spent his days and night living in the herd. Altair was poor, he had nothing but he was happy. He worked hard to sustain not only himself but his family. One day while in the field Altair saw Vega bathing in the river.

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.

She was breathtaking. Her skin was smoother then silk and her eyes had a permanent twinkle. Her smile made time stand still and her voice attracted the life of all colors and types. She was the most beautiful thing Altair laid his eyes on. He knew there was no way he could allow her to walk out of his life.

They were very different and came from different walks of life but despite there differences, they fell in love. They did have one thing in common though both Altair and Vega loved to spend there day listening to birds sing and watching them play. Altair would split some of the cow’s grain and wheat with the birds that would play in it and build nests. Vega would fill the bird baths with clean water and put bread crumbs on the edges so that the birds had a little snack while bathing and singing to her.

Altair and Vega spent lots of time together which detriment of the Gods. They have not become her prime focus. Although their clothes were just as beautiful as before it took longer to create. This made the Gods angry. They compelled her to stop seeing Altair but she did not listen. This made the Gods furious and they cast a barrier around her home to keep Altair out.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.
Altair was commanded to stay away from Vega but he to did not listen. He went to her house where she was sitting behind a sewing machine. He walked in, to there surprise, picked her up and carried her outside to the river. Where they both stayed, watching the birds play, till the sun went down.

The following day the barrier was bigger and stronger, if anyone came close they would be stopped dead in their footsteps. Altair waited for Vega by the river as he does every day. He then went looking for her. As Altair came close he saw this majestic aura around Vega’s home, unshaken he walked in unharmed he wrapped Vega in he’s armed covered her with a blanket and took her outside. It was obvious there love was stronger than any spell.

“This madness must end” Altair mumbled to Vega. She knew there’s nothing she could do to stop it as Vega had a secret. “How”? She asked with a twinkle in her eye and shiver in her throat. Altair looked at Vegas dark brown eyes “Marry me”. The pause felt like a lifetime. They both knew that they belonged together and despite the obstacles and knowing each other for a short time, being together forever just felt right. Although overwhelming, love this strong demands to be felt. Vega looked away and stared at her own reflection in the water. “I can’t,” she said forcing an exhale and almost immediately bursting into tears. Altair stood up angrily and ran off to him’s own assumptions.

Vega knew that no matter how strong their love was she must listen to the Gods. She had a well-kept secret. She was the daughter of the king, made out of wedlock. Her mother was a maid in the palace and died giving birth to her. The king asked the Gods to spare her life and in return, he will give her up to serve them in a form they seem fit. It was agreed and Vega was spared and raised within the castle walls by the maids as a peasant child.

She was taught to knit at a young age by one of the cleaners. Her potential was easily spotted. Although ashamed the king loved her as he did his other. If word came out she’s disregarding he wishes he would be furious. The king would be held responsible, not only would there secret come out and potentially destroy the royal marriage but also the kings worth as Vega owes her life to the Gods.

A week has passed without Altair and Vega seeing each other. Vega sits in silence in her protected home but feels vulnerable. The birds and knitting don’t kill the silence and when her eyes close all she sees is Altair’s face in front of her. She had enough, although scared to leave the house she goes looking for Altair in the field to put everything on the table. Fully expose herself and come clean. Their eyes meet from a distance and tears roll from both ends. Their arms link up and the hugs feel like a light at the end of the tunnel, not an exit but a realization that they would never give up on one another.

The following day Altair walks to the palace, through the city, to ask the kings permission to marry his daughter Princes Vega. Dressed in the finest cloth. Tired but determined to speak to King Remos personally the soldiers let him through thinking he’s a rich prince to discuss trade prospects. The passage leading to the thrown feels like an eternity. The king seems deeply intrigued to hear what this man has to offer. They speak alone. “I’m here for your daughter’s hand,” Altair says with command in him’s voice but respect on his face. King Remos seems confused at first then recognizes the pattern on Altair’s garment. “My daughter is barren and committed to living to please the Gods”. “That’s why our ground is so blessed”. “Her attire is traded all over the land, she does not have ability nor time to be a wife to anyone” the king explains. “Now leave”! King Remos commands. Altair surprising felt neither regret nor disappointment as if he knew the outcome before asking the question. King Remos instructs two of his finest soldiers to find Altair and kill him.

The following day Altair visits Princess Vega at a home and finds what seems like a mountain of energy around the little cottage. Realising that the Gods know what he has done and his intentions he looks up “I am not afraid” he shouts and walks right through the front door to find Vega sleeping peacefully, the prettiest thing he has ever laid his eyes on. Gunshots go off in the background trying to penetrate the fortress. Both Altair and Vega come to the same conclusion. Altair without giving a minute of thought runs out to protect the one he loves. Vega follows thinking the soldiers will recognize her and stop. They don’t and between the bullets, Vega manages to get hold of Altair and they hug one last time, or so they thought.

The bullets bounce right off of them. Standing in the middle of smoke an aura produced by there love covers them like a protected sheath. Altair takes Vega’s hand and they walk into the forest where they got married.

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

The Gods were furious, their power was futile. Knowing that this bond is powerful beyond measure something needed to be done. One night while asleep Vega and Altair were separated into glass boxes and put in the sky on opposite sides and separated by the celestial Milky Way. Where they will remain forever.

There love burns brighter than any star in the sky and can still be seen even today. One day in the year on the seventh day of the seventh month Altair cries so hard that all the birds on Earth fly up and create a bridge with there wings so that these two lovers can be together for one special night.
