review 1: This was a fun book with some hilarious lines. Bryant is an endearing old fart of a detective. Sometimes I was a little confused as to who some of the officers were but that's because I haven't read the rest of the series. But this one was so clever as to the dialogue that I do plan to read more. A few reviewers commented on things like the author describing a room as having no direct sunlight and then having the detective stand by the window. Well, yeah, you can have a window and no direct sunlight if the window is on the north side of a building. The author was just trying to say the room was gloomy without saying "the room was gloomy."
review 2: Another great one from Christopher Fowler. This one has a villain who's not easy to spot, and some very clever tw
... moreists in the plot. As always, London plays a large part in the book, which I love, and the characters of Bryant (especially) and May, together with their mismatched associates, keep things interesting. How could you resist this: 'The white witch and self-proclaimed leader of the Coven of St James the Elder turned up in a purple woollen tea-cosy hat, a green velvet overcoat and orange leggings. Her glasses, winged and yellow-tinted, hung on a plastic daisy chain around her throat. She looked like a small seaside town celebrating a centenary.' Genius. less
