My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Ohio Wesleyan
Location: Delaware OH
This past week I attended a professional meeting with other leaders from across the University of North Carolina that all have responsibilities of a Chief of Staff. Not all had that title but everyone had common duties to support a university CEO.
One of the leaders I met for the first time was Laura Baker Campbell who works at the North Carolina School for Science and Math (NCSSM). Her professional duties are to support Chancellor Todd Roberts and to take care of special events at NCSSM.
Over the two days we were together I discovered that Laura graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University (87′) . I gathered some pretty interesting stuff from her along with looking online about OWU.
First the university is located in Delaware OH which is 30 minutes from Columbus, Ohio which happens to be the 15th largest city in the U.S.
Ohio Wesleyan University was established with community support in 1842, when the Rev. Adam Poe, pastor of Delaware’s William Street Church, encouraged the citizens of Delaware to raise funds to purchase a building and establish a university “of the highest order” in central Ohio.
Rev. Poe was a good fundraiser because his persuasion resulted in 172 citizens raising $10,000 to help purchase the former Mansion House Hotel, now known as Elliott Hall. The University’s official charter was granted from the Ohio Legislature on March 7, 1842.
The school also has a moniker it is referred to. It is Oh-Wooo! Photo below is of Ohio Wesleyan campus.
Some famous or notable graduates or former students of OWU included Branch Rickey and Norman Vincent Peale.
Peale was an author, minister, and founder of Guideposts, and he was a champion of the power of positive thinking having authored the book “The Power of Positive Thinking”.
Branch Rickey was a Major League Baseball executive elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.
