review 1: Not for the faint of heart. If you've got teen fans of the show Hannibal, serve this one up and they won't be disappointed. Sasha, the teenage daughter, was totally believable as she struggled to break free of the way her family raised her. Ivan, their 12-year-of son, was probably the scariest character in the story. And that says a lot when the whole family is made up of cannibals. He is so clearly a sociopath who is one step away from serial killer. Although, in his family, that would just make him a good provider.
review 2: I had mixed feelings while reading The Savages. I loved the play of pro-meat versus vegetarian dogma, and how rigid belief systems allow people to rationalize all sorts of hypocritical behavior. It was also a pleasure watching Sasha try
... moreing to individuate by exploring different things without losing her identity to her dietary choices. What kept shocking me were the brief one-word to one-sentence references to difficult topics for middle readers (pedophiles, STD's, etc). I like that the references are there as it matches the book's dark humor, but I couldn't help wondering what kind of parental tongue-lashing I would have gotten had I given this book to a child who has been sheltered from these topics. less
