This is the latest EP from A Light Within, a post-metal band from the US.
This is atmospheric post-metal with some progressive and post-rock elements. Take the post-metal triumvirate of Isis, Neurosis, and Cult of Luna, and throw in some Deftones, The Ocean, and Devil Sold His Soul, and you’ll have a basic starting point.
Expressive and atmospheric, this is music that’s strikingly performed. With a strong presence and undeniable charisma, this is a contemporary exploration of how heavy music can be emotive and affecting, while still having a weighty delivery.
Obvious thought has gone into the structure and arrangement of these compositions. This is clearly a band who have taken some time with these songs, ensuring that they’re crafted into the right shapes and positions for their artistic vision.
The singer has a very emphatic and powerful voice. He’s a clear focal point in these songs, with a certain understated dramatic quality that fits nicely alongside his commanding delivery. The music generally sits behind his expressive voice in a less dynamic way, complementing and enhancing rather than taking over. The music is like a glacial expansion of something atmospheric and monolithic, whereas the singer’s voice offsets this with a vibrant and charismatic performance. These two aspects work extremely well together, creating post-metal songs that have a lot of depth and substance.
A Light Within have impressed. Give this a listen.
