review 1: I first found "The Smitten Kitchen" when I got a wild hair up my butt to learn how to make bagels; Perelman's site was the easiest, most visually appealing recipe that came up. I was excited to find this book at the library, since I'm loathe to buy cookbooks (or pattern collections, or any how-to, really) outright, not knowing if they're worth the expense. like the site, this collection is beautifully photographed, and the recipes are easy and appealing, with an emphasis on vegetarian fare that can be easily modified for meat-eaters. I will probably end up adding this to my collection, even if I just look at the pretty pictures more often than using the recipes.
review 2: This cookbook is a delight. Perelman's casual writing style reminds me of a fun, witty, d
... moreown-to-earth friend. She tends to obsess over the same things as me like flavor and cooking from scratch, but isn't interested in fussy, overly showy food or putting on airs. I bookmarked so many recipes to make that it would have probably been easier to mark those that I'm not interested in. She's an inspiring home cook -- she adapts, revises, invents, and explores until her food turns out the way she wants. less
