An Evil Mind is number 6 in the Robert Hunter series by Chris Carter and I have loved these books since I laid eyes on the first one, Crucifix Killer.
The Robert Hunter series is based on a Detective Robert Hunter and his most graphic cases while working with the LAPD. You can pick these books up in any order but I do like to read them from the beginning as you get a feel for the main characters.
Synopsis –A freak accident in rural Wyoming leads the Sheriff’s Department to arrest a man for a possible double homicide, but further investigations suggest a much more horrifying discovery – a serial killer who has been kidnapping, torturing and mutilating victims all over the United States for at least twenty-five years. The suspect claims he is a pawn in a huge labyrinth of lies and deception – can he be believed?
The case is immediately handed over to the FBI, but this time they’re forced to ask for outside help. Ex-criminal behaviour psychologist and lead Detective with the Ultra Violent Crime Unit of the LAPD, Robert Hunter, is asked to run a series of interviews with the apprehended man. These interviews begin to reveal terrifying secrets that no one could’ve foreseen, including the real identity of a killer so elusive that no one, not even the FBI, had any idea he existed … until now.
I’ve decided to do this review because I FREAKING LOVED THIS STORY and I want everybody to know how amazing it is. Every single one of Chris Carters books are amazing but An Evil Mind really took it to the next level. Chris Carter’s writing improves with every book and his stories get more and more intense. An Evil Mind has many aspects that I find truly thrilling but the one that stood out for me is that some of the events and people are based on real life.
As someone who has been interested in the minds of criminals for a while now I was so happy when I read this page in the book and with the author having experience in criminal-behavior-psychology just made it that much better. In Chris’ writing you can just tell he’s had experience, every one of his books are realistic stories of things that could really happen, which is of course frightening but what else could you ask for in a thriller?
Every single case is so different from the last and I’m always excited to pick up another Robert Hunter book. I have recently started reading Chris Carters book and he is now one of if not my favourite crime writer.
It is so hard to express my love for this book but I needed to write this review so everybody knows how exceptional it is! This novel strays away from the first 5 books in the series and has quite a different feel to it for many reasons and because of this I worried about how it was going to turn out before reading it. Now I’ve read it I’ve realised that Chris Carter couldn’t of been more successful in writing this book if he tried. He really helped me get into the head of the criminal and it really, really got me thinking!
In this novel we get to know a lot more about Robert himself and his past experiences, in a chapter or two I really felt myself welling up at the thought of Hunter as a child, I have a huge heart for this character and he is so clever!
I went through so much with this story and I really felt that Chris Carter ‘made it’ with this book, this particular story out shined the rest and he never fails to amaze me. This has got to be my favourite crime-fiction book so far but I still have number 7 to read of his series and I’ve heard such good things about it and there’s also an 8th coming out in February! I cannot recommend this series or this author enough, if you are a crime lover, like a good suspense novel or a really into psychology I beg you to pick up these books, you will not be disappointed!
I am looking to review every one of the Robert Hunter series eventually as they all deserve to be talked about but I just had to write this one up now as it’s the best so far!
