Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

I’m glad I started the year of with this gem of a book. I’m both ecstatic and scared that this is the first book I read this year. Ecstatic because of course, this book is everything I wanted and more. Scared, because what if the rest of my 2018 reads pales in comparison to this amazing story? Okay, sorry for the dramatics. Let’s proceed. The only comment I was able to enter in my Goodreads review was a measly WOW. Yeah, I know, pretty lame. But I had such a hard time coming up with words that can describe what it felt like reading this book. It was so simple yet magical. Dante is such a beautiful person and I wish I have someone like him in my life.

He tried not to laugh, but he wasn’t good at controlling all the laughter that lived inside of him

And I relate so much to Ari’s plight and personality that I somehow felt that this was my journey too. I’ve always loved coming of age stories and this is definitely one that was done right. I never felt that the pacing was too slow because Benjamin Alire Sáenz managed to lure me in with his simple yet poetic prose.

Sometimes pain was like a storm that came out of nowhere, The clearest summer morning could end in a downpour. Could end in lightning and thunder

The moral of this story is definitely something we’re all familiar with. Be true to who you are. Embrace your uniqueness. Accept change. You’ve probably read a lot of books telling you the same thing however I urge you to allow Benjamin Alire Sáenz to tell it to you this time.
