Autonomous features a rakish female pharmaceutical pirate named Jack who traverses the world in her own submarine. A notorious anti-patent scientist who has styled herself as a Robin Hood heroine fighting to bring cheap drugs to the poor, Jack’s latest drug is leaving a trail of lethal overdoses across what used to be North America—a drug that compels people to become addicted to their work.
On Jack’s trail are an unlikely pair: an emotionally shut-down military agent and his partner, Paladin, a young military robot, who fall in love against all expectations. Autonomous alternates between the activities of Jack and her co-conspirators, and Elias and Paladin, as they all race to stop a bizarre drug epidemic that is tearing apart lives, causing trains to crash, and flooding New York City.
This book was exactly what I thought it would be, Greedy corporations and robots, which is A+ and should be in all books really.
I really enjoyed the tech in this story and the plot of corporations controlling drugs and not sharing patents, which causes the rich to live healthy lives while the poor suffer for no other reason but greed and money. FREE HEALTHCARE PEOPLE ITS A THING, DO IT.
Jack counter engineers drugs and sells them at an affordable price to the public, she’s gotten into shit now she’s reproduced a drug that’s causing people to work themselves to death not realising the company releases a damaging drug if administered without professional supervision. Being chased but the IPS and having to figure out a cure to save the public Jacks in some deep shit, morally and well the kind were people are torturing your known contacts for info.
We see Jacks present and her past in flashbacks, how she became a pirate and who her friends are that pop up through out the book.
The other Characters we see are the agent and Paladin. Paladin is a bot indentured to the IPS and programmed to save humans and protect their human at all costs. Paladin knows that loving and being willing to protect their human is part or their programming but they don’t care which may also be because of programming.
I reaaaallllyyy enjoyed the robots and the explanation of how they came to be and how the government uses the cost of their build to indenture them. On paper bots are to be indentured for 10 years and then allowed to become autonomous (free to do what they would like) but many die and get re-indentured forever being a slave to humans or government corps. Bots being indentured has also caused the humans to start indenturing other humans, the slave trade is booming, unless you have a franchise (job/sponsorship?) you’ll have to indenture your services if you want to eat or go to school.
The one thing I found a little lacking was the character personalities, don’t get me wrong they were far from bland they were all good but none of them were great or made me really love them.
If you love Robots and the sound of this synopsis I think you’ll enjoy this, the premise is fantastic and the book really delivers on it.
4/5 Stars
I don’t expect many of you guys have read this because it’s a pretty new release and more of an underrated read but if you have what did you think?! Is this on your TBR? Any other fave Robot books?
Thank you so much the netgalley and the publishers for allowing me a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
