review 1: I would give this a 3.5/5, as this is a nicely written psychological mystery (they call it a thriller, but I'm not sure about that). Most of the book is narrated by Rose, telling her story from her prison cell, and also from entries in chapters entitled "Black Book Entry", a journal she kept. Rose is in prison for the murder of a baby. The other chapters are about her probation officer, Cate Austin, who is starting her job in the prison Rose is in, and must give her opinion whether Rose should be released on parole. I understand that there is a second Cate Austin book, and I intend to read that one also.
review 2: Ruth Dugdall's "The Woman Before Me" is a haunting page turner that takes the reader on a gripping journey through, among other things, questions abo
... moreut maternal identity, obsession, guilt, remorse, and deciding what is "the truth." As a psychotherapist, I was particularly interested in the story's treatment of depression and other problems that can take a great toll on the life of a family and the individuals in that family, and further to that, the question of whether someone's traumatic past provides justification for their present infractions. Dugdall's prose is smooth, fluid, and accessible. Highly recommended! less
