Book review: Girl Rising: Changing the World One Girl at a Time, by Tanya Lee Stone

Stone, Tanya Lee. Girl Rising: Changing the World One Girl at a Time. Wendy Lamb Books, 2017. $22.99. 193p. ISBN 978-0-553-51146-8. Ages 14+. P8Q9

Throughout the world, 62 million girls don’t attend school although many of them want to get an education. Stone’s exploration, inspired by the 2013 documentary Girl Rising, included her viewing of 45 hours of raw video that covers unjust struggles of human trafficking, child marriage, slavery, and gender discrimination in countries around the world—Haiti, Afghanistan, Sierre Leone, Egypt, and far more.

Verdict: Rich in photographs and infographic designs, the heart-rending stories are a must for people to understand the advantages of girls in industrialized nations. Stone unflinchingly depicts the resilience of girls fighting a devastating destiny of poverty and ignorance.
