Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey is one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in awhile. I hadn’t heard of it before but came across it in Ollie’s (retail store with books and a little of everything) for just $4.00 and it looked interesting so I bought it. It is a fantasy story but the author also mixes in actual places and historical figures. It is book two of a three part series. Book one is Dragon’s Keep and book three is In the Time of Dragon Moon. However, the book reads like a stand alone story and I wasn’t aware it was part of trilogy until I looked up some information about it after finishing the book.

The story starts in the year 1192 AD in a place called Wilde Island. We meet Tess the daughter of a good, but weak, woman and an abusive father. Tess has abilities that she must keep secret or else she could be burned at the stake for being a witch. However, Tess is not a witch, she is half-fey. Her real father is a fey (fairy) but Tess doesn’t discover this until later because her mother has always kept it a secret. Tess eventually has a run in with the witch hunter and barely escapes with her life. She goes on the run with her two best friends and meets a strange, but kind, man who protects them. Tess can’t help but fall for Garth, her protector, but discovers he isn’t what he seems.
This world is a place where fairies, dragons and magic are real. I would think this book would be appropriate for teen and up. It’s not childish in the least and there is mild mentions to sex and drinking but it’s very tame. This is one of the best fantasy stories I’ve read and I will be getting the other books in the series. I can’t recommend this book enough. Let me know if you’ve read anything by this author!
