Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman
“Gold makes monsters of men.”
Synopsis
When her father is murdered for a journal revealing the location of a hidden gold mine, eighteen-year-old Kate Thompson disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers—and justice. What she finds are untrustworthy strangers, endless dust and heat, and a surprising band of allies, among them a young Apache girl and a pair of stubborn brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, a startling truth becomes clear: some men will stop at nothing to get their hands on gold, and Kate’s quest for revenge may prove fatal.
Review
Even though Vengeance Road receives quite a lot of praises for its gorgeous cover, I haven’t heard much about the book itself. I went into this book not expecting much because I have never read a western and I do not know what to expect. I actually rather enjoyed this book.
I liked the entire western feel and setting reading this book because it’s not something I am familiar with. It definitely is different from any book I have read but it’s growing on me. I’m enjoying it. I would love to read another young adult western book to see if it’s something I want to read more of. The sequel, perhaps.
I had a great time following our main character, Kate, as she goes on her quest for revenge. I enjoyed seeing her uncover secrets as the story progresses and learning new things about her family and herself. I also liked Kate as a character. She is a strong, independent individual that would not take no for answer.
Overall, I would say that this book is rather average. It is interesting enough to keep me wanting to read on but not captivating. Like I said before, it is different, because it’s a western. And that is one element of this book that I particularly enjoyed. Other than that, there isn’t much else to say about this book.
