review 1: an excellent mystery and I loved the whole Tolkien/LOTR connection - very well done. Also, this is a mystery where the sense of PLACE is a big part of the story - in this case Iceland. Like the 'Berg' to Stephanie Plum and Edinburgh to Rebus - Iceland is part of the story. Why not 5 stars? Well the main character - the cop Magnus Jonson is so immature - he's acts like a spoiled brat and for me - he was the weak link in an otherwise fine story, Will probably not read another Magnus Jonson adventure.
review 2: Where the Shadows Lie by Michael Ridpath has the trappings of the typical murder mystery with a detective who is a fearless and ethical loner. Magnus Jonson’s complicated childhood includes the unsolved murder of his father when Magnus was 20 years old.
... more It has propelled him into police work in Boston and keeps him from a committed relationship with a woman. The novel is atypical in its Icelandic location. The author writes fine descriptive detail of the landscape, people, and customs of this isolated island. Also rewarding is the plot in which an obscure 12th century Icelandic saga, shrouded in mythology, secrets, and superstitions, becomes the focal point of the mystery. Woven into the story are references to The Lord of the Rings and letters from J.R.R Tolkien. Characters who call themselves Ilsidur and Gimli even make an appearance. This is Michael Ridpath’s first novel featuring Magnus Jonson and Iceland. I’m looking forward to reading Far North, the next one in the series. less

Really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator was brilliant, which makes or breaks an audiobook.
