Book Talk: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Man, am I on a roll reading all these books by Taylor Jenkins Reid! Let me say it over and over and over – I love this woman! She writes so beautifully and oh gods of all authors, please make everybody else write the same way this woman does. So. Freaking. Beautiful.

Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds through the decades—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo not only revolved around the life of Evelyn Hugo – the iconic bombshell and actress from the 1950’s ’til the 80’s – but also that of Monique Grant’s – a very talented but struggling writer for a magazine called Vivant.

Making the paths of these two ladies cross created nothing short of a wonderful and heartfelt story of love, loss, ambition, self discovery and a whole lot of sighs.

This is my third Taylor Jenkins Reid novel and I must say, she gets better and better with each book! Man. All the freaking feels! I can’t stress enough how significantly poignant her style of writing is, and though I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction (I AM NOW, ALRIGHT!) I never stopped flipping each page of this book!

Majority of this book focused on Evelyn’s life in the limelight, and I had such a wonderful experience of knowing each detail about her as if I was Monique – as if I was the one actually writing her biography for her. There were so many times while reading this book that I wasn’t able to put it down because I wanted to know what happened next, and isn’t that just one of the most wonderful experiences for a reader?! Gah! I was engrossed and addicted with Evelyn like how the rest of the world was during her time!

Finally, if you like surprises then this book is definitely for you. I loved how everything in it was just so unpredictable. One second you think you get where it’s heading, the next second everything is totally going crazy!

Okay, to be frank my words can never (ever!) justify the beauty of this book so just forget about this review and JUST. PICK. THIS. BOOK.UP!!! I promise you, it’s going to be one of the best decisions you’d ever make in your whole reading life!
