books and bakes: an irish country christmas + vegan mocha cake

December is finally here! Which means I no longer need to feel ashamed of blasting the Spotify Christmas channels while driving (and eating, and showering, and all day really). A few weeks ago I started Patrick Taylor’s first book in his “Irish Country Novel” series that tells the story of a young doctor in rural Ireland in the 1960s. It feels quite like James Herriot but the patients are people instead of critters. The books are so good–I devoured the first two in about a week in time for starting the third book in the series, An Irish Country Christmas, during the Christmas season.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves James Herriot, good doctoring, or just a cozy read in time for the holidays.

Also–this vegan mocha cake at Harmony Bakery in Baltimore–is fantastic. All of their treats are vegan and gluten-free and they offer a wide range of choices beyond baked sweets. And yes it’s totally normal to start your Saturday at 8:30 in the morning with a giant slice of chocolate cake. I finished it all and my teeth hurt and it is blissful.
