The 55th fired on the front lines for 15 minutes, according to the war diary, in retaliation for a trench mortar bombardment this morning (1). Otherwise, it was indeed a pretty quiet day. (2)
This pencil sketch by William McDougall Anderson was made eleven months ago and shows a card game in progress, British soldiers playing and watching. (3) The scene at the gunpits at Cité St Pierre can’t have been much different.
