Cité St Pierre, December 29, 1917

Saturday          This a.m. broke dull & cold at 10 a.m. we fired a retaliation of 50 rounds I did not go out I slept in & arose about noon Fritz was fairly quiet all day we played cribbage tonight am well

The 55th fired on the front lines for 15 minutes, according to the war diary, in retaliation for a trench mortar bombardment this morning (1). Otherwise, it was indeed a pretty quiet day. (2)

This pencil sketch by William McDougall Anderson was made eleven months ago and shows a card game in progress, British soldiers playing and watching. (3) The scene at the gunpits at Cité St Pierre can’t have been much different.
