Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis (Goodreads)

There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

My review:

I’m officially done with my first book of 2018! I have to say I started the year on a good note book wise. I really enjoyed this book and liked a lot of things about it. In fact this is the first book I have been able to finish in a while. I have had to DNF five books I was really looking forward to reading. They were all disappointments so I’m really thankful to this book for getting me out of my reading slump.
This story is about Alosa. the daughter of the pirate king who is sent on an undercover mission to retrieve a map on an enemy ship. Things don’t really go according to plan and she forms a sort of friendship with the first mate which leads to a whole lot of comedy.
This was a good read. This sounds like your typical YA novel but the author managed to make it interesting in her own way. There were some surprises thrown in there along with some really funny scenes and I just loved it all.
Alosa was very interesting, at no point while reading did I ever get bored. I liked her confidence but at the same time I did wish she would stop bragging. I understand her situation didn’t give her a lot of opportunities to demonstrate her self proclaimed bad assery. I just wished she would shut up about it until she could back it up. All I remember is one fight scene where she didn’t hold back(which took all of 3 seconds really), the rest was more of her observing(the last fight on the Night Farer). I did love her scenes with Riden, all of them. Their conversations weren’t boring or too cliche and it was funny watching them struggle with their developing feelings.
I also liked Riden. I knew from the beginning he had a good reason, besides cowardice, for sticking with his brother. He really is a nice guy and I can’t wait to see what happens with him next. I wouldn’t mind reading his POV too.
The rest of the characters did not really stand out for me, they were all what I expected, nothing out of the ordinary. I do like that the author gave some of them a backstory. at the moment I only care about Alosa and Riden.
I liked that the author always threw in little hints on the big revelations. (view spoiler)[I won’t lie, I only realized Alosa was a siren when she revealed it. (hide spoiler)] Then there is the thing about the map’s location, the real third pirate lord. there were quite a number of WTF moments here and unlike most books I’ve read I did not see them coming. Sometimes you forget what a good plot twist feels like.
Overall, this book was really good for me, it wasn’t perfect but it was good which is why I rated it 3 stars.
I’ll be patiently waiting for the next book in the series. Lucky for me it won’t be too long now.
Thank you so much for reading and let me know what you think in the comments section below, I would love to discuss.
xx Fayetino.
