review 1: A charming story, as usual. Bittersweet sad that it's her last, though. Thanks to Ursula Jones for figuring out a good way to finish it. Aileen fails her magical initiation to be a Wise Woman, or so she thinks. Before she has a chance to try again, she and her aunt, and Ogo, and the prince, are whisked off on a quest to take down the terrible barricade that has separated the islands. In order to complete the prophecy, they need one person from each island. They also need the help of each island's guardian.
review 2: This is a sad book for me, because it's the last book Diana Wynne Jones wrote before her death (and completed by her sister). I've loved all of her books, and this is up there with all of the rest - a joyous, silly, exciting romp with interesting ch... morearacters and settings. Only hard-core fans will be able to spot the transition between the two authors. It's only sad because we know there will be no more forthcoming like this. less
