Deacon by Kit Rocha

I wasn’t sure it was possible, but I loved Deacon and Ana’s story a lot more than I did Ashwin’s.

Thanks, Kit Rocha, for providing the advanced copy to read and enjoy. xoxo

Oh how I loved this one. Ok, let me tell you why.

Giden’s Riders are famously known throughout the sectors (and beyond) as incredible fighters, as amazingly devoted and loyal group of soldiers. The Riders put their lives on the line every day, willingly, welcomingly, knowing their sacrifice ensures the safety of their sector.

For that reason, they won’t form romantic attachments, have children (willingly) and tie themselves to others. This was established after seeing the situation of Ana’s father, of the first Riders, upon losing his wife when Ana was a child. Raising a child who’s solely dependent on you when you might not return home every day, isn’t desirable.

Deacon, the Riders’ leader, is 110% devoted to this life, to their cause, and to his Riders. He’s somewhat unreachable, always serious and focused. Almost cold. His Riders admire him, worship him to a certain degree.

Ana, the sole female Rider, feels the responsibility of proving herself as a woman among fighting men, and showing other women they can do it, too, will spar with any of the Riders, including Gideon. Her secret crush (though I’m pretty sure she doesn’t really realize it).

Insanity is upon Sector One, and mostly the Riders. Someone is after Deacon and they all gear up for an epic fight. So now that things get tense and emotions run high…

A moment is all it takes for them both to realize they feel more than they should. A few much more epic moments after that, they are forced to deal with their love when a mission that could change all of their lives. And when Deacon’s life is on the line and Ana has to make a call, her future as a Rider is questioned.

Deacon also presents some future possibilities, with Laurel (Six’s sniper, I think?) and Gabe, and another possibility which I’m hoping will be fulfilled (dare I hope there will be a little romance with a young lad?)…

Gideon’s outlook in this story ties it all together beautifully, it shows a true leader is both stern and determined, but also passionate and compassionate.

Deacon is a fabulous story in what proves to be awesome Sector One tales. It made me laugh, swoon, tense and cry. I enjoyed it thoroughly and can’t wait for the next book.

Ana has trained most of her life to achieve one goal: to prove that anything men can do, she can do better. Now she’s Sector One’s first female Rider, and being the best is the only way to ensure she won’t be its last. Distractions aren’t allowed–especially not her painful attraction to the reserved but demanding leader whose stern, grumpy demeanor has already gotten into her head.

Deacon has spent the last twenty years trying to atone for his past, but the blood he spilled as a mercenary and assassin will never wash away entirely. If his Riders knew the extent of his sins, he’d lose their trust and respect. It’s easier to keep them all at arm’s length, especially Ana. But his newest recruit’s stubbornness is starting to crack his defenses.

And their sparring matches are driving him wild.

The passion sparking between them can’t be denied, but neither can the vengeance barreling toward Deacon. When his old squad comes back to punish him for his betrayal, Ana and the Riders are squarely in the line of fire. The only way to save his people may be to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But first, he has to convince Ana not to follow him straight into hell.

Once upon a time, two best friends decided to write paranormal romance. And while that was awesome, they also sometimes wanted to write insanely dirty stuff that wasn’t paranormal at all. This is that stuff.
