Right, this is the greatest book I read last year and maybe for a few years too, I can’t remember a better one in recent times as great as this one. It was intro to me at Meredith festival last year which I was talking about it in yesterday’s post. Plus right now I’m now reading four books at the same time for some mad reason so none of them are going to be finished this month so this one can be my book of the month, I promise if the last post about a book was popular I would do more. So guess what? It was.
The guy from the couple camping next door to me at the fest told me about this, he was like reading this book and had done so every year for the last few years since discovering it. I was like “it must be be good” but he was like “it’s the greatest book ever written!” I’ve only read it once, so far but it does sound like a great idea to re-read it. Maybe I might just have do it sooner or later and yes, it really could be one of the greatest books ever written too.
Published in 2008 so next year it’s ten years old. It’s 710 pages so it’s not a very quick read, it did take me a while but oh my god I didn’t want it to end really, that’s how great it is. I would recommend it to anyone and/or everyone who reads this blog, stop reading my blog and go and find this book right now and start reading it yourself, OK?
So if you still reading and not looking for copy of it, I’ll tell you a little more about and see if I can convince you by the end of this post to go and check it out. So to start with it’s very Aussie, it’s most likely the most Australian novel I’ve ever read. It follows three generations of the eccentric family and friends that stick by them over that time. On the back of the book it’s says: “Meet the Deans” and then quotes the book itself:
“The fact is, the whole of Australia despises my father more than any other man, just as they adore my uncle more than any other man. I might as well set the story straight about both of them now.”
This gives nothing away really, just rises more questions than anything and I kidd you not he somehow tell a story that makes both those things happen and to be honest with you, it could really happen in Australia too. That’s no joke at all but it’s a total LOL book too, I don’t think I’ve laughed so much with one book since I don’t know when. I think it’s funny because it could really happen here, it’s like if you did read it in the newspaper not the novel, you would say “oh yeah, crazy Aussies” or something.
A Fraction Of The Whole was Steve Toltz debut novel and I think he’s got another one out now but I’ve still got to read that one. I don’t know if I really know how to write about a book, music no problem I can talk or write about it until the cows come home but still unsure about this. It’s smaller blog post for Thursday but I can’t recommend this novel more highly.
