Left Drowning Series by Jessica Park

I am still in the corner waiting on the third book in the Unexpected Series… I did bring my phone into the corner so I could still read. And read I did. Another day, another awesome series. Good news this time, people – NO CLIFFHANGER! These are all about love, healing, fate and destiny.

  • Romance: Good… somewhat of a slow build to sex, which I always appareciate. And there’s definitely a will they/won’t they component in the first book. I like when the falling in love isn’t so immediate and easy. Both of the main characters have massive histories and baggage they bring into the relationship and it’s really great to read about them working through all that so they can be together. I do feel like they become a little codependent on each other, which would worry me if these were real people… but since it’s in fictionland, I’m gonna hold off on sounding the alarm. So let’s talk about that sex. Dear Jesus, it’s hot. Like really hot. This lady knows how to write the sex.
  • Grammer/Editing: No complaints from me on this one!!!
  • Storyline: The storyline is really good. It’s somewhat basic of “New Adult” genre books, where you have two wounded birds trying to pick up the pieces of their past. However, these pasts are so interesting and complex and intertwined that it doesn’t seem recycled at all. I definitely figured some things out pretty early on… I don’t know if the author meant for some of the plot points to be big “gotcha” moments, but they weren’t for me. My figuring things out quickly didn’t take away from the power of those plot points, however. This book is different than the Unexpected Series in that it’s much less suspenseful…much more of a character study of these two main characters. The author did great with allowing you to feel their emotions, their hurts, their joys.
  • Special: So what makes these special? The more you read, the more you understand how connected these two characters are. It’s really cool the way the author wove in bits and details about their childhood and how everything just seems fated. As much as you don’t want either of these characters to have experienced the pain and heartache they did, they had to in order to get to where they can be together. Even though the second book wasn’t my favorite, I loved that it played with the idea of different types of love and how to understand that. It’s an interesting and pretty deep concept that I haven’t read in other books and I thought the author pulled it off very well.
  • Recommend: I absolutely recommend this series. One warning is that if abuse and fire are triggers for you – stay away. They factor pretty heavily in both books. I really thought that these were well written, great storylines and hot sex…  a perfect trinity!

I think I’m going to take a break from the serious books for a minute. These were emotionally draining (in the best way possible), so I’ll be back soon with a fluffy book!

Bye y’all!
