I think I found my new favorite author. Kristina McMorris is amazing. This is my second book of hers I’ve read, but I want them all. This story is a mixture of history and romance, inspired by the lives of the author’s grandparents. I finished it in less than 24 hours.
Set during WWII, Liz is at a USO dance in Chicago when she meets Morgan. He isn’t the most handsome, but she feels drawn to him all the same. Although she’s taken, she agrees to dance with him and feels something inside herself shift. The spell seems broken when she later sees Morgan dancing with her friend Betty.
Morgan is leaving for Belgium to fight in the war. He can’t stop thinking about Liz, but hasn’t heard from her. Betty however, sent him a beautiful letter. And so their correspondence begins.
Everything isn’t as it seems for Morgan. It turns out that Liz is the author of the letters, as a favor to Betty, and signs them with Betty’s name. When Betty enlists and ships out, Liz continues to write to Morgan. Through their letters, Liz and Morgan realize they have a deep connection. Liz doesn’t know if she can risk everything by telling Morgan the truth– that he isn’t falling for Betty at all, just the image Liz portrays of her.
The book is full of characters to love. I laughed and cried with them, as cheesy as that sounds. They were all so thoughtfully written, and had to go through so much. War time caused a lot of losses for everyone, and it’s easy to feel for these characters. Liz and Morgan may be the main characters, but they certainly aren’t the only story line. Each character has their own triumphs and tribulations.
This book was as addictive as a Nicholas Sparks novel, with the historical fiction element that I love. So worth the read. I’ll have the whole Kristina McMorris collection soon, I have no doubt about that.
