review 1: This was a new genre for me--an African detective novel by a Ghanaian and set in modern-day Ghana. Detective Darko Dawson is asked to join an investigation into the murder of a young female medical student in a less civilized corner of Ghana where witchcraft is still practiced and the priests "marry" all the young girls they want. Based on actual practices in Ghana, this novel provided insights into a culture I hope I never have to run across.
review 2: I started reading Wife of the Gods tentatively because I don't usually read mystery novels, but I loved this book. I picked it because it's set in Ghana (a country I'll be going to soon) and not only was it a well-written murder mystery but it portrayed a lot of aspects of Ghanaian culture. I particularly liked
... morethe contrasts that Quartey reveals between the detective from Accra - a city man, supposedly educated and progressive - and some of the "bush" detectives, whose policing methods are different, to say the least. less

Intriguing story, well told. Plot twists aplenty. Bodes well for a good series.
