What is a Light Field Camera?

A light field camera, also known as plenoptic camera, captures information about the light field emanating from a scene; that is, the intensity of light in a scene, and also the direction that the light rays are traveling in space. This contrasts with a conventional camera, which records only light intensity.

Lytro introduced the first commercially available light field camera, the company introduced a sensor that could capture more than previously. Now, for the first time, aperture and focus became adjustable in post-production, and an interactive perspective became possible. Lytro referred to those interactive images as a Living Picture. Unfortunately, the company has ceased manufacturing consumer cameras and, as of November 30, 2017, Lytro shut down its light field photo sharing website.
