review 1: "Let's Get Digital" is an excellent guide on the evolution of the story-telling market into new, electronic forms. Gaughran is an intelligent, well-written guide through the changes and the ways in which self-publishers have come out of the shadows to have a natural series of advantages over the traditional New York Publishers. Highly recommended (along with its sequel) to anyone looking at self-publishing.
review 2: I suppose it was okay. Let's Get Digital has a major drawback, though. It was written three years ago. The self-publishing landscape is changing all the time. I kept asking myself if the information I was reading was still relevant. As a total newbie to self-publishing (I haven't done it yet, but I plan to), I have no way of knowing. A book like th... moreis would clearly benefit from having updated editions and because there isn't a new edition, this book gets two stars from me rather than three. I would have given it three because I thought it was concise and had some good advice. It didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know from reading other materials. Honestly, I'm starting to think that you can learn all you need to know from reading online materials put out there by people who have gone before. I did appreciate the thirty-three success stories that Gaughran includes toward the end of the book, though none of these are very detailed in the authors' specific methods for gaining readership. Gaughran's marketing section is rather limited and is, likewise, lacking in specifics. I know some of the WHAT but I don't really know the HOW. I still may read his follow up, Let's Get Visible, especially if it goes into more detail about marketing. But I think I'll look at the self-publishing blogs first to see if I can get more info that way. less
