review 1: This is the first Ann Perry book I have read. I like Agatha Christie mysteries because she gives you the information you need to solve the mystery. Very few writers can do this without giving away the ending. Ann Perry didn't give the information to solve this until the last few pages. Overall I would say it was poorly written and frustrating to read due to it's lack of the important information and constant repetition of distracting information. The book was very repetitive about how thankless a task Lt. Narraway has been assigned to in defending a man convicted of murder and helping a prisoner escape. Throughout the story many characters despise him for defending this man. She makes it appear as though everyone wants to see the guilty person hang which leads the reader t... moreo believe he isn't well known, but people want justice done, or those who know him believe him capable of this murder. Narraway is told to make it look as though he has given a proper defense to the convicted so that his hanging is justified and not seen as vengeance. Again, making it seem as though the convicted man is disposable and that no one cares that he will hang, they just need to blame and hang someone so that the case will be closed. It is almost the end of the book before the reader can understand that the convicted man is well liked by almost everyone, no one believes that he is capable of this murder, and yet none of them have defended him or argued on his behalf. Perry also gives the impression that the characters are familiar with the escapee and the murdered guard. She gave no information about the character of the prison guard or escaped man until the end. For a reader it is very easy to overlook this information because you assume that if it is not given it is not important. Her twist at the end of the book is to inform you that none of the people that responded to the crime were familiar enough with either man to know one from the other.
review 2: This Christmas mystery begins in 1857 after the violent Siege of Cawnpore, India. A guard is killed and an Indian prisoner escapes, leading to tragic British deaths. Medical orderly, John Tallis is arrested as an accomplice because he was the only soldier unaccounted for when the crimes were committed.Lieutenant Victor Narraway is chosen to defend Tallis and is not encouraged to try very hard at the trial. But a soldier's widow and her children and his own stubborn faith in justice give him the determination to find the truth. This is a book club selection for December. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it if I'd read the other books by this author where Victor Narraway was a part of the story. less

Another book on CD to put me to sleep. Literally. Usually I like her novels, but not this one.
