Lighthouse Bay 3 (Pages 59 – 107)

SPOILERS!!!

In 1901 one night while Isabella is in her cabin, she is woken up by urgent calls from her husband. There is a strong wind, and fearing the ship could capsize, the captain plans to beach them. Isabella and her husband manage to get onto a boat, but while they try to row to land, a powerful wave pushes Arthur off the boat, and he disappears. Isabella manages to get to land, and she finds herself on some kind of island, alone and clueless about her bearings. For days she feels miserable; some native people help and feed her, and then she gets a glimpse of a lighthouse beam. So she starts walking, hoping to find the lighthouse. After days her energies flag, but she manages to reach the lighthouse. A cottage stands beside it, and when she knocks, a man opens the door. His name is Matthew Seaward, and he feeds her and lets her sleep in a bed. Yet, he tells her that she needs to make herself look decent and return to civilisation. Isabella is afraid of what will happen from then on. In any case, she has shed her own name, fearing that the Winterbournes might want to find her, so now her name is Mary Harlow. From the shipwreck the only thing  she has managed to save is the chest with the mace and her baby’s necklace.

In 2011 Libby is getting settled in the cottage. Since Mark was keen on learning more about the mystery of his family and the shipwreck, Libby drives to Winterbourne Beach, and there she speaks to a man who makes his living out of the history of the shipwreck. The man tells her that it is not clear why the ship sank, but the thing is that nobody survived. He also tells her that Percy Winterbourne came to Australia to check the area, and he collapsed in his room and died. We know that Isabella hated Percy with a passion since he raped her. Now I wonder if Percy found Isabella when he was in Australia, and something happened that resulted in his death. Now people usually come to Winterbourne Beach, trying to find the precious mace which was lost in the shipwreck, and that is how this man, Graeme Beers, makes his living. So he suggests Libby have a go, and even though Libby is not fond of diving, she promises to think about it because Mark would surely have liked to have done so.

Libby is feeling apprehensive as well. At night she hears noises outside, and when she comes to check, she finds a car and as soon as she turns on the light, the man drives away. Scared, Libby calls the police, and the officer on the phone is an old school mate, Scott, who promises to send a patrol car to check on her.

Libby then calls her sister when she realises that she didn’t leave her number with her. They meet for some lunch in the B&B. As they eat dinner, Juliet expresses her concerns about Libby wanting her part of the business. Yet, Libby reassures her that she doesn’t want her money, and even though their father left the business to both of them, she knows that it is Juliet who has invested not only her money but also her work and energy in the place. So the B&B is Juliet’s morally. At the end of the night things are smoother between the two sisters, but there are too many things that they haven’t mentioned. Libby tries to tell her how sorry she is about the past, but her words feel empty and flawed. It is clear that something happened in the past, and Libby feels guilty about it. We can also intuit that a key element in the problematic situation between the two sisters was Andy, who Libby sees Libby still keeps a photograph of. I imagine that Andy was Juliet’s boyfriend, but then what happened? Did Libby steal him from her sister? And what about his death? Did he die as a result of what happened back then or what?
