Magnus Chase and The Ship of The Dead by Rick Riordan review

Goodreads page right here. My reviews for the first book in the series here and the second one here.

Synopsis: It picks up after the end of the second book in the series. The book follows Magnus Chase, a dead orphan boy who lives in hotel Valhalla and is trying to stop the end of the world. I’m trying my best to keep this mostly spoiler free so I’ll be very vague. Like usual.

General thoughts about this book: A masterpiece, so wonderful and fantastic. I sold my soul to Rick Riordan and I don’t regret it.

Wonderfully great things about this book:

  • The humour, like usual, is really good. I find that humour in books is hit or miss but Rick Riordan always comes through.
  • The writing, like the humour, always comes through. It’s descriptive enough to understand and visualise but yet still leaves room for imagination. It reads like the main character actually wrote it and never seems out of character.
  • The characters were my favourite part of this book and they were really good, like usual. I adore the main cast and I would love to see Magnus again.
  • Alex Fierro is life. It’s just how it is. Her scenes with Magnus are beautiful and I will always ship it.
  • The plot line is all over but at the same time, right here. I don’t know how I got through these books but it was a glorious read.
  • The whole story works together. The characters alongside the plot and the writing all mesh beautifully.
  • The Percy Jackson and Annabeth cameo. It’s wonderful.
  • Great things about this book:

  • Loki is a villain that find three-dimensional and just isn’t there for fun. He makes sense to me and I like that about him.
  • The setting, Boston and the nine worlds, is fascinating to me and I just always felt like I need more of it.
  • Norse Mythology is not what I typically specialise in but I do adore it. I love it especially in this book.
  • The diversity of the cast. How Samirah is Muslim and Alex is trans and gender fluid. There is more diversity than that but I don’t see many Muslim characters in books or gender fluid ones either. Especially not in a good light.
  • Meh things about this book:

  • This is the last book in the series. It broke my heart to finish this book and not have a next one to read.
  • Overall I would totally recommend this book if you love the series. This is the best book of the year so far.

    [4.8 stars]
