My frustration with Netflix culminated a few days back I and ordered some actual, physical, movies this weekend. They’ll hopefully arrive in time for the next one and that anticipation is something I’ve truly missed. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like the streaming services have mainstreamed my movie watching habits far more than I’d ever thought was possible. To begin with, they’ve narrowed down the search field for when I want to watch something. Sure, I often browse IMDb for suggestions but if the films aren’t available through streaming I start to look for other options and this is not something I like about myself. On the contrary, I’ve loved watching these obscure, small productions as well as the bigger titles. Just try to find an “international” small production movie pre-2010 for streaming, I dare you. Other than that, I like holding the physical copy in my hands, looking at the cover, just like with records and video games.
In the same fashion I broke the habit of listening to playlists instead of albums, I am now going to get back at least some of the magic with physical movies and make an effort to watch the titles I’ve been meaning to, but didn’t get around to since they weren’t available online. Am I alone in this or does anyone else have the same experience? Which movies would you like to watch, or recommend that I watch? These are the ones I got for us to see this time.
Image sources: The VVitch, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Villmark 2.The VVitch is probably the one I have the highest hopes for in the bunch but still don’t quite know what to expect of. Since Hollywood started to put spoilers in the trailers I avoid them if there’s a film I might actually like. The VVitch came in a Steel box edition, it simply was impossible to not get it.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a favorite of mine already that I’ve watched several times. Wes Anderson is amazing with his movies and all of them are just wonderful pieces of art, intense and beautiful. If you’d like to see Voldemort in muggle form, here’s a great opportunity.
Villmark 2 is a Norwegian film I haven’t seen yet but been thinking about getting since it released. Scandinavia isn’t big on horror productions so I try to support and watch almost anything that comes from here. Sometimes the ideas are truly original, like Thale, When animals dream or the masterpiece Let the right one in (but the book is better) and sometimes it’s more…Camp Slaughter, which is hilarious in its own awful way.
