The main character in this book is Claire, a lawyer who helps teenagers in trouble.
Claire is in a relationship with Mark, another lawyer, specialised in lawsuits in damages. At the beginning of the book Mark surprises her by stopping before a house and telling Claire that he wants them to move in together and buy this house. Claire loves Mark, but she is unsure she wants this kind of commitment. She doesn’t like the house or the area where it is, but she doesn’t want to let Mark down. So what she asks is for some days to sleep on it.
Then we see that something in Claire’s past still haunts her, and that comes from the time when she was fifteen. AT the time she lived with her mother alone as her father had walked on them. Her best friend was Frankie, and they were both keen on United, the football team, and I imagine she means Manchester United. Frankie has a crush on one of the players, Matt Goodyear, and Claire likes one of the new players, Andy Pailes. At present time when Claire goes through the boxes from that time, she finds some photographs, and in them she describes Andy and her together, so this means that they had a relationship? She also finds a letter she wrote to her future self, and many of the things haven’t been fulfilled. She hopes to be married to Andy, but instead she married someone called David at 23 and got divorced at 30, and now she is in a relationship with Mark, but I have the hunch that she is not passionate about him. She also hoped to be a partner in a law firm, but instead she works for a small one, defending teenagers. Almost everything has also changed. Her best friend was Frankie, but she mentions that she hasn’t seen or talked to her in many years, and her love for football has also vanished.
I wonder why that period in Claire’s life was so important and why she is reluctant to revisit those memories. I imagine that at some point she will come into contact with this future. Will Frankie reappear? And what about Andy? Did he and Claire have a relationship?
