NoSchoolViolence.org Awarded for Innovative Prevention Program

From a press release on March 14th, 2017 from NoSchoolViolence.org

Elastic has announced honorees of its inaugural Elastic Cause Awards at the Elastic{ON}17opening keynote address in San Francisco. Besides honoring eHealth Africa  and IST Research, Elastic awarded NoSchoolViolence.org for its project focused on reducing school violence. The Seattle non-profit has created The Lantern®, a query tool that helps parents, students, school staff, researchers, and counselors understand how certain student behaviors relate to specific forms of violence. The goal is to create highly specific intervention strategies. Their goal is to interrupt a child’s behavioral process before it leads to violence.

The Elastic Cause Award judges- evaluated entries based on their social impact and reach. Steven Schuurman, CEO, noted that “I am in constant awe of the innovative use cases realized with the Elastic Stack, and as we’ve seen with the Cause Awards, there’s no limit to how people are pushing the boundaries of our technology to improve the world…We were so moved by the nominations we received and are thrilled to share the honorees’ stories, hopefully inspiring more game-changing ideas from our phenomenal community.”

Seattle’s totally volunteer NoSchoolViolence.org is committed to reducing the near million incidences of school bullying, fighting, drug use, sexual harassment, vandalism, gang activities, stealing, weapons use, threats, intimidation, ostracizing, and cyber-bullying plaguing American K-12 schools annually.

“From day one, we knew we needed a search solution that could ingest a wide range of data formats and grow with us as we conducted more complicated search and analytics activities while providing important data visualization capabilities,” said Dr. Paul Privateer, Founding Director of NoSchoolViolence.org. “Elasticsearch drives The Lantern® query search tool, providing a straightforward way for users to eventually query millions of databases, police records, journal articles, school records, media reports, medical data, student journals, social media and miscellaneous information since 1955. Children do not deserve to go to school in fear. School violence doesn’t stop with door locks and armed school officers. It stops when we now what causes and when we can track how and when evolving behaviors fuel violence. Stop one domino and the process ends.” Privateer asked the audience to send an email to contact@noschoolviolence if they wanted to support the national initiative.
