This month I managed to read and review seven books, including one as part of a blog tour! I also shared my ideas of gifts for fellow book lovers as well as my unboxings of three subscription boxes! Here is a reminder of what I blogged about this month with links to each in case you missed any!
My first blog post this month was my ‘Gift for Bookworms’ post in which I shared a few of my favourite bookish items that would make great gifts for booklovers for Christmas! This seemed to be a popular post so hopefully it provided some inspiration! Next up I decided to read a couple of books that had been on my shelves for a long time. The first of these was The Knot by Mark Watson. This was the story following the life of a wedding photographer who has some troubling memories that have haunted him for years. The subject matter was a little more serious than I anticipated but it was an enjoyable read about love and life and family relationships over time. The second was Skeletons by Jane Fallon which was another story featuring family bonds and secrets. In this one I was gripped as its protagonist struggles to deal with a secret she has discovered which could tear her family apart.
Next up I read a non-fiction book in the form of The Secret Life Of The Owl by John Lewis-Stempel. I don’t often read non-fiction but as a lover of owls I couldn’t resist this one! This was a beautiful little book which explores the relationship between humans and owls and includes some fascinating facts about these extraordinary creatures. Then it was onto an Orenda Books blog tour as I read Whiteout by Ragnar Jonasson. The fifth in the Dark Iceland series, this was another haunting and atmospheric crime novel that had me hooked.
I was very excited to receive not one, not two, but three subscription boxes this month! The first to arrive was the first crime and mystery box from My Chronicle Book Box. This was an excellent box packed with three books and some gorgeous bookish gifts. Then there was the 1st anniversary box from Ninja Book Box with a futuristic theme. As always with Ninja Book Box there was so much love and attention applied to putting this box together and celebrating a year of promoting independent publishers. And finally there was the latest box from Fairy Loot which as always was a brilliant box with some interesting books and gifts!
The final books I read this month were the books included in the My Chronicle Book Box! All three of them were crime and mystery based but with different styles and settings. There was Death In The Stars by Frances Brody in which sleuth Kate Shackleton investigates mysterious goings on at a theatre company. Then there was Did You See Melody? by Sophie Hannah in which a woman on a spa break finds herself entangled in the case of a young girl who was thought to have been murdered but appears alive and well in a hotel room. And lastly there was Strange Sight by Syd Moore, a creepy, ghostly story concerning a grisly death at a restaurant, and how the team from the Essex Witch museum hope to solve it. All of these books had me gripped and I enjoyed them all – I think I should pick up crime novels more often…
