Bishop Riley has a drug problem, one strong enough for his band to give him a time out in Alaska to sober up before he becomes an issue. Penny has issues of her own, one being her mother and her need to be accepted on a male college hockey team. While Bishop hides under a false identity, hanging with Penny’s grandfather to help rebuild a car, Penny tries to hide her feelings for her best friend while trying not to hate his super perky girlfriend. When they meet, they become each other’s secrets, building an odd friendship that slowly involves into something they both can’t easily define.
I’ve had Out of Play on my radar since I saw it’s expected publication. After buying it, I let it sit, waiting for the mood to strike to read it. As a former hockey player myself – a really crappy one, that’s why I say former – I was really intrigued by this being about a female hockey player. Most books are about male hockey players and the girls that love them. While that also grabs me, sometimes I want to read about female hockey players. This did not disappoint, it made me happy.
Out of Play is told in alternating POVs, showing us inside the worlds of both Bishop and Penny. But while we see Bishop’s struggle to recover to a place where his band can trust him, where he isn’t strung out and unconscious with random girls, we see Penny try and decide how to avoid her feelings, fighting with her mother about staying close to home for college, and trying to prove herself not only to her family but to college recruiters that show up to her games.
What I really liked about this story was the lack of insta-love. There are sometimes that I hate it and sometimes that I like it. This is one of those stories where it would have been weird.
All in all, I really enjoyed this story and am happy I found it.
