Excerpt

The audience finally sat back down and waited. Al was playing next. Dale thought he knew which piece he was going to play. It always made Dale smile when he played it. It reminded him of the Tom and Jerry cartoons he still loved to watch.

“And now performing Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody number two is Albert Borkowski,” the MC announced. There was more than a polite applause as had been the case with the other performers.

Dale couldn’t help but feel a little proud and was pleased that Al looked so good when he stepped onto the stage. He paused, standing next to the large piano and did a small formal bow before adjusting the piano seat. He flipped the tails of his tux out behind him as he sat.

It might have just been Dale, but he felt as if the whole room were holding their breath, waiting for Al to begin. They didn’t have to wait long. He couldn’t help but smile. It was the same song that he’d heard Al practicing. For some reason it made Dale want to jump up and dance and then act silly, running around chasing a mouse.

Dale tapped out the beginning rhythm on his leg. Gina reached over and took his hand, stopping him. He didn’t take his eyes off of Al, but did frown at her keeping him from playing along with Al, if only in his imagination.

After a few minutes, he pulled his hand away and did it anyway. He looked at her and with a look dared her to do it again. With his attention back on Al, he couldn’t help but smile. But during a slower more serious part, he had a feeling in his stomach. He couldn’t quite decide if it were fear or dread or what it was exactly. But it was Al’s playing that was giving him that feeling.

Another minute or so into the piece, the hair on the back of Dale’s stood on end. It was almost scary how it made him feel. It didn’t last long because right after that was his favorite part: the part where he wanted to jump up and chase a mouse.

He couldn’t help it, but not only was he tapping his thigh with his finger he was keeping time with his feet. Dale watched intently, Al’s fingers a virtual blur as they flew over the keys of the piano. Then it was back to the main melody, the part where Dale just wanted to dance and go back to beating the mouse.

Then… it was the end. Dale jumped from his seat applauding. He may have even done a fist pump, but wasn’t sure. All he knew was that Al had without a doubt, nailed it. Dale wasn’t the only one who was immediately out of their seats. The entire auditorium was standing. Many were shouting Bravo. Dale looked around and he then understood what, or more importantly, why people knew him. In this world, Albert Borkowski was a rock star.
