review 1: Loved loved loved this book! I'm always excited to read a new Culture novel, but I found this one particularly enjoyable, mostly because I liked the main character so much. My only issue was in trying to keep the names of the ship Minds straight, but I always have trouble with that. Overall, great characters, exciting story, highly inventive worldbuilding, and the classic Banks combination of smart scifi and amusing twists. Definitely recommend!
review 2: Although my experience with Banks's books has generally been good, The Hydrogen Sonata was disappointing. Perhaps a few interesting ideas about the role of religion in a society, otherwise not much in terms of ideas, plot, or character development. Most seriously, there wasn't a believable dynamic that moved
... morethe plot forward and for the most part it didn't make sense why any of the characters did what they did. less

Banks admits that the book is a little anti climactic, but other than that, a solid culture novel.
