review 1: Loved loved loved this book! I'm always excited to read a new Culture novel, but I found this one particularly enjoyable, mostly because I liked the main character so much. My only issue was in trying to keep the names of the ship Minds straight, but I always have trouble with that. Overall, great characters, exciting story, highly inventive worldbuilding, and the classic Banks combination of smart scifi and amusing twists. Definitely recommend!
review 2: Although my experience with Banks's books has generally been good, The Hydrogen Sonata was disappointing. Perhaps a few interesting ideas about the role of religion in a society, otherwise not much in terms of ideas, plot, or character development. Most seriously, there wasn't a believable dynamic that moved ... morethe plot forward and for the most part it didn't make sense why any of the characters did what they did. less
