Review – The Upside of Unrequited

I know I’m a little late to the party but OMG THIS BOOK IS THE CUTEST AND I LOVE BECKY ALBERTALLI. I’m 100% going to read the rest of her books.

The Upside of Unrequited is the personification of the heart eyes emoji. It also has the best opening line in the history of opening lines. “I’m on the toilet at the 9:30 Club, and I’m wondering how mermaids pee.” I HAVE ASKED MYSELF THE SAME THING SO MANY TIMES. If that doesn’t make you want to read the rest of the story to learn about the person having these thoughts, I don’t think we can be friends.

The story is about Molly, her twin sister Cassie, and their group of friends navigating a summer of being teenagers. Molly has never had a boyfriend, but has had 26 crushes, so Cassie decides it is her mission to finally get Molly to stop pining from a distance. The story is full of delightful characters and wonderful relationships. It just oozes happiness at every turn.

Thoughts while reading:

I want to be friends with Molly and feed off her Pinterest vibes and design badassery.

I kept finding myself smiling as I was reading. Just little contented smiles.

I love the love in this book. It’s so straightforward and that’s exactly what I needed right now. Just a group of teenagers dealing with love and friendship and family.

There was some drama, but nothing explosive; just some basic twin anger, which I can relate to. There was some miscommunication/jealousy induced drama, but I mean, it wouldn’t be a teen romance without it.

The parents are actually parents and do good parent things like parent! Did you follow that? Good.

I’ve come to realize that I must be reading too many intense novels with menacing undertones because I kept expecting something bad to happen. Or someone to die. Or maybe it’s John Green’s fault because I still haven’t forgiven him for TFIOS. Like I said, I needed a straightforward love story right now, to reset my suspicion meter when everything is going a leetle to well for the characters. THEY CAN BE HAPPY OKAY? Just let them be happy. Sorry, sorry… calm down Siobhan. I really need to read some happier books…suggestions? Please send help.

  • “I don’t entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. You have to have a crush on the exact right person at the exact right moment. And they have to like you back. A perfect alignment of feelings and circumstances. It’s almost unfathomable that it happens as often as it does.” p. 15

I have literally had this exact thought. Almost word for word.

  • “Even hearing the word Netflix has a way of centering me. Netflix means not having to suck in your stomach or think of anything smart or adorable to say. It means a whole night of not wondering what people think about you. No alcohol, and no flirtation, and no confusion, and every organ calm and settled.” p. 141

Netflix, the great escape. If you haven’t thought about Netflix like this then you’re a liar.

  • “There’s something magical about twinkle lights on tree branches.” p. 335

The truest sentence ever written. Speaks to my sparkly soul.

Have you read The Upside of Unrequited? Because you totally should. Especially if you like happiness. If you don’t, then move right along and check out my review for A Monster Calls.

Questions for you:

Have you read any of Becky Albertalli’s other books?

What book always makes you happy when you read it?

P.S. I’m back on the “books that make me cry” bandwagon with History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera.
