review 1: This book is perfect for the reader who enjoys realistic teen fiction, military stories, mysteries, and football. That might sound like a lot of story lines for one novel, but the author does a great job putting them all together.Mike's dad was killed in Afghanistan but all Mike knows about his death is that his dad died a hero. His mom refuses to talk about it and his sister was too young to remember their father. But when letters from Mike's dead father begin to arrive for Mike, the uncomfortable routines of all of their lives get disrupted. Some of the disruptions are good but some aren't. Mike tries to figure out who is forwarding the letters that his dad wrote before his death . . . But when he does, Mike learns that you never really know your friends.Loved this b... moreook. Super plot and an easy read.
review 2: I expected not to like this book, considering I wasn't a huge fan of Reedy's "Divided We Fall" but this one wasn't so bad. The plot was actually realistic and at times sad and cheerful. The plot was very similar to Divided We Fall--teenage boy, dead dad, over protective mom, outspoken girlfriend, military connection, etc. Still, I enjoyed this one much more, most likely because there wasn't an overwrought plot about a civil war.I think this book would be engaging for high school age students because it is realistic fiction and the character development is good, but I wouldn't use this to teach social studies at all. The book does discuss the war in Afghanistan, but only briefly touches on issues such as hatred for Muslim-Americans and the role of the United States in rebuilding Afghanistan. However, this only comes up through secondary characters and isn't even a major feature of the book. 0/3 less
