It has been one year since her normal life was brutally taken from her. Still adjusting to the shock of the change from mortal to immortal, her world is rocked again and she is taken under the wings of a guardian angel back to Sage Sanctum- a school beyond reach from the vampires that are determined to destroy her.
There, she is freed from her vampiric chains and her normal needs and urges return. However a new urge arises… Lust. A forbidden lust toward her savior, her guardian angel.
Attempting to control these desires is difficult, very difficult and when things couldn’t possibly get any worse, her situation becomes life or death as someone, somewhere in the school is aiding those who want her dead.
Personally I’m not overly fond of books about angels but naturally there are expectations and from the synopsis it became obvious that this story takes a twist to the whole concept. Not to mention I really like the author contemporary works so I decided to try a fantasy from her.
The story starts with a huge twist right at the very beginning and it took me by surprise. I didn’t expect it all maybe because the synopsis is a bit misleading. Then after a couple of chapters after there is another huge and unexpected twist to the plot which just shakes up the events even more. The storyline is a bit strange but really easy to follow. However my initial enthusiasm quickly simmers out thanks to the fact that most of the action takes place in the first half of the book, after Ruby, the main character starts to attend the academy everything just slows down and becomes dull. The plot revolves around Ruby and her self-discovery oh and the world building. There is a lot of raw information about vampires, guardian angels, gods, and politics or even about the academy. Despite this amount of information I had a lot of questions left regarding how things work or even really important things regarding the plot. So all in all I don’t feel like I got a clear enough picture about the world. This paired with the not so exciting storyline and the quite unsatisfying ending didn’t make an appealing reading experience. I’m disappointed to tell you the truth this whole thing has the potential to be way better.
I didn’t like Ruby at all. Yeah, she is kind and strong, stood with her head high despite the hardships she went through in a short period of time. She is persistent and takes the obstacle head on but after she fought through some of these obstacles she started to act like she is invincible, all knowing and mighty. She took risk she shouldn’t have, without thinking about the consequences and causing a lot of trouble for others. I hate this frequently recurring element about YA characters. She is quite selfish and childish in this regard.
About Eli we only know the little things Ruby discovers so he stays kind of a mystery. He is talented and hot; he has a huge sense of responsibility and aims to meet every expectation others have for him. But his attraction towards Ruby throws a kink into this notion of his. He tries to keep distance between them. I liked him a lot he is really logical and reasonable.
I down rated this book because I didn’t like the main character and I think there is a lot of plot holes in the story.
