The last we had seen the Virals, they had just solved the murder of Katherine Heaton. Things seem to be looking up for our characters as they wind down the summer and learn more about their newfound super powers.
Seizure, the second book in the Virals series, is written by novelist Kathy Reichs and it was published in 2011.
Seizure sees us reuniting with the Virals pack a few months after the events of Virals. Tory is the headstrong, fearless and smart leader of the pack, Shelton is the tech guru, Ben is the outdoors man, and Hi is the comic relief of the group. A newer edition to the pack is Cooper, the wolf dog that Tory adopted at the end of Virals.
Conflict is immediately established within the first five chapters of the book, where it is revealed that the Loggerhead Island Research Institute where the Virals parents work is being shut down due to budget cuts. Fearing the possibility of being separated, with little to no control over the virus or the powers they have, the Virals quickly devise a plan to find money- and fast.
Tory then finds out about a famous outlaw pirate named Anne Bonny, and that her treasure is rumored to be hidden somewhere in Charleston. The Virals then go on a quest against time and other rival treasure hunters to find Anne Bonny’s treasure so they can save LIRI, their home, and most importantly, their pack.
One of the first reasons Seizure is so enjoyable is because the reader sees the return of all of their favorite characters. Along with those characters, the reader also sees the return of their unique and funny senses of humor. Seizure also sees the return of Chance Claybourne… who becomes obsessed with finding out the Virals secrets after the events he witnessed at the end of the first book, and during the middle of Seizure.
One of the things that changed slightly from Virals to Seizure is the focus of the knowledge that the reader learns. It shifts from mostly science facts, to more facts about local Charleston history. This is understandable, considering that the first book deals with investigating a cold case, and this one involves a treasure hunt.
Seizure is a good follow up in the Virals series, because we see the return of Tory, Ben, Shelton and Hi and watch as they grow and learn more about the mystery of the virus and its side effects. Add in a treasure hunt for famous pirate gold and a journey deep into Charleston’s past, and Reichs creates a second novel in a series that will have readers begging for a third book.
