Snared (Elemental Assassin, #16) by Jennifer Estep
My rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Good read!
Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web…
Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.
My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.
A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.
The Elemental Assassin series is generally a reliable series of good, enjoyable book. The current book is number 16 in the series and, so far, it is only one book in the series that has disappointed me.
This book is a good addition to the series with the usual mix of character interaction, mystery, detective work and good old-fashioned ass-kicking with and without things that go boom.
Spider’s search for the members of The Circle gets intertwined with the case of a missing girl. As the book blurb states, the missing girl is but the top of the iceberg and I am sure that most of the readers will not think of it as much of a spoiler if I say that the two cases are not as separate as it may seem at first.
As usual I like the characters, the interaction and, of course, the action. Spider is not taking any shit from anyone and, as the (official) boss of the underworld she has the reputation to make the minor loudmouths and thugs shit their pants when they realize who they tried to pick on.
The story? Well it is a fairly classic Spider story with a few surprises but no major twists really. The main bad guy is not really that impressive but he certainly deserved Spider’s attention. He is not all there is to this particular story though but revealing more would definitely be a spoiler so read the book if you want to know more.
One the whole a good and entertaining read.
