review 1: It's hard to come up with much to say about this one that isn't covered by "four novellas of love gone wrong." There's a reason Joyce Carol Oates is known for her short fiction - most of the time it's amazing. This is a great example of a collection that I found riveting and disturbing in all the best ways. If you're a fan of the darker side of things, Gillian Flynn style, this is a good collection to pick up.
review 2: four novellas on love gone wrong. oates has a knack of creating horror in the most benign settings. . . the first story was interesting enough but ended without closure, a tendency of oates that have always been sort of annoyed by. but the second segment, 'so near any time always' was effectively creepy and probably the best of the four.
... more it involves a teenaged girl who becomes entangled in a twisted relationship that results in her being stalked, but it is what is revealed after the stalker is killed that chills. (shudder). the third novella, called 'the execution', is sort of a typical tale about a misunderstood kid trying to kill off his parents. not a bad read, but predictable. and the last story about what happens to an abused girl later in life as she tries to make her way is just too sad and realistic. with oates, i either love the tale (we were the mulvaneys, blonde, missing mom) or i just am not captivated. this one was good. less
