If you already followed me before I started blogging in English you probably know that the main theme here used to be books! I don’t read as much anymore and I really didn’t like writing reviews, so that kinda stopped. However I have collected a lot of books over the year and I still enjoy reading a lot, so I do have some favourites now. I like more books than I can write about in one post, so there might be some more posts about this. Also let me know your favourites!
Aristotle and Dante discover the secret of the universe – Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.
I didn’t really know what to expect from this book, but when it was translated to Dutch I saw that a lot of people got excited about it. That normally doesn’t mean that I buy it, but after I read the back I really wanted to read the rest. When I read it I just wanted to finish it as soon as I could. The book discussed some serious topic but it was still a fun and kinda cute read.
We were liars – E. Lockhart
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
I had heard a lot about this book, but the only thing I really knew is that there is a huge plottwist in the end. Some hate it, some love it. I for sure was one of the people who loved it! It was the last thing I had expected and I was in total shock after I found out what had happened.
Freaks like us – Susan Vaught
When Jason Milwaukee’s best friend Sunshine vanishes, Jason knows that something is terribly wrong, but solving her disappearance will require pushing through all the voices in his head and then getting the world to listen to him. His schizophrenia is stopping him from remembering the events leading up to her disappearance, and often he discounts his own memories, and his own impressions. But his deep knowledge that he would never hurt his friend, plus the faith of his parents and a few others in the town bring him to the point of solving the mystery. In the end, it’s Sunshine’s own love for Jason (Freak) that persuades him of his own strength and goodness.
I bought this book because I found it at a bookmarket without really knowing what it was about. It was only €2,50, so I wasn’t afraid to take that guess. It ended up being such a cool book. I really enjoyed it and it was the first book I’ve read about someone with schizophrenia that doesn’t describe that person as the bad guy. Well at some points they did, but because you read from Jason pov you get to know what’s really going on.
I actually wanted to write about 6 of my favourite books, but then the post would’ve been way too long. The other books are for another day!
