Something Blue

I LOVE this episode. I can’t believe it isn’t an ‘Epic Episode’ (scoring over 25). It isn’t particularly creepy- it’s too hilarious for that, and Willow is the Big Bad but she doesn’t mean to be, which makes her less than intimidating.

I just can’t stand feeling this way. I want it to be over.

Willow was such a stalwart character in the beginning. Fondly referred to as ‘Old Reliable’, even. The way she took umbrage to that phrase probably should have set the alarm bells ringing. In Season Three she grew in confidence, and it was wonderful to see. But, at the same time she discovered magic and it released a part of her that she didn’t even know she had. Magic lets her give in to her wants and desires immediately. There are so many things  magic can fix, that she no longer wants to wait for karma to catch up with those who deserve it, or time to heal her wounds. When Buffy and Xander thwart her attempts to drink away her sorrow (we know how well that worked for Buffy), she turns to the only other drug that she has easy access to: Magic. Willow is a gifted witch, but at the moment her skill outstrips her experience and that makes her arrogant and oblivious to the nuances of the ‘will be done’ spell. When she demands that her hurt be mended, her heart isn’t really in it, probably because deep down she knows that it won’t really help. However, when she gets angry, she says stupid things and for a split second she really means it. And hey presto, Giles is blind and Buffy and Spike are engaged.

I mean, I’m going through something – and you’d think, every once in a while Buffy could make best friends a priority.

Seriously, why do we all like Willow so much (and I do)? She’s so needy, and so selfish! She can’t cope with being sad, and she hates when things don’t go her way. She misses Oz, of course she does, and she’s sharing the pain- excellent practice, that’s what friends are for. But, she cannot balance her own feelings with everyone else’s life. When she’s suffering, everyone should suffer with her. But, she’s the first one to offer pointless platitudes and try and pair Buffy off with the first available man when Buffy misses Angel (remember Parker?). You can’t hate her though, she brings us the match made in heaven that is Buffy and Spike. The unbearable sickly sweet wedding they started to plan never fails to make me laugh.

I don’t know. I love being around him, I think he cares about me, but… I still feel like something’s missing…

Of course, Buffy is actually starting to think about Riley. She hasn’t even started to date him yet and the alarm bells are ringing. She may have rebounded from Angel with Parker, but she’s not over Angel, not by a long way. Buffy is now seeking what she would consider a ‘normal’ relationship, and Riley seems interested. Plus he’s sweet, and has good arms and let’s face it, she thinks he’s boring. You can see it coming a mile off, Riley is nothing more than a distraction. A well-deserved distraction. I sort of feel sorry for him already.
