review 1: There are very few books that I have read that have made me truly think and be aware of what can be the harsh realities of being a woman in a man's world. While this book addresses far many more issues than that alone, I've never read a story that was harder to read, and also more important as a woman. So startling and haunting and the story is like an electric shock to the system. Everyone should read this beautiful piece of literature and take a second to think and to learn.
review 2: This book is pretty tough subject matter, but I could not put it down. I've read essays by Roxane Gay (and follow her on Twitter) but I had been reluctant to read this novel, because it is an unflinching story of a kidnapping for ransom and its aftermath. One of the most moving ... moreparts is the main character's changing relationship with her prickly mother-in-law. I did get a little annoyed with the main character's tendency to run away from her relationship issues (in flashbacks from before her kidnapping) but I think that was foreshadowing of how she handles her situation later. less
