Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

All my fellow ‘good children’, ‘good students’, ‘good friends’ and those of us working at being more assertive, welcome!

I’d like you to meet Rachel – our kinswoman.

Just like us, she’s always been the good friend. On it’s own, that is already quite the feat. Throw in that ‘perfect’ friend and it’s a daunting task.

A look into the Plot

In ‘Something Borrowed’, we meet Rachel and Darcy, lifelong best friends at the brink of turning 30. While Rachel is single and slaving away at a job she hates, Darcy continues to live the charmed life she always has, this time, with a handsome fiancé and glamorous job.

One night, after lots of drinks, Rachel finds herself in bed with Darcy’s fiancé. It seems like a pretty straightforward problem. Confess your betrayal to your best friend or keep it a secret forever?

Now, if you’d still like to read the book for yourself, I’d advise you to stop here. Spoilers ahead.

What seems like a mistaken one-night stand quickly escalates into a full-fledged affair. It begins to look like Rachel and Dex (Darcy’s fiancé) might actually have feelings for each other. Feelings that are more deeply-rooted than we would have guessed. Now Rachel has to figure out whether she’s willing to lose her best friend over the possible love of her life.

Why I enjoyed the book

I like that Dex and Rachel had met before and were even friends in college. It not only makes their developing love story more realistic but also gives the characters a chance to be further portrayed.

Darcy has classic narcissist behaviour but it’s something you may not notice right away. Especially if you’re anything like Rachel.

The book is written from Rachel’s perspective, which may make you think it’s biased. However, I found it important for us to see the Rachel and Darcy friendship from that viewpoint. And guess what? The sequel (Something Blue) gives us Darcy’s point of view, so win-win!

In fact, I should re-read that one soon as well.

Genre: Fiction, Romance, Chick Lit

My Rating: 4.8 out of 5

Recommend for: any young woman, I would say, but particularly those interested in the broad topic that is friendship; someone looking for a sweet, happy-ending romance or sappy chick lit story or anyone who’s watched the movie adaptation. (Books are always better *wink*)

Have you read this book or any other by Emily Giffin? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
