SongADay: Deftones – “Swerve City”

Artist: Deftones
Song: “Swerve City”
Album: Koi No Yokan (2012)
Label: Reprise
Genre: Alternative Rock/Metal

Highlights:
– the driving intro riff
– Chino Moreno’s soaring vocals

The first track off 2012’s Koi No Yokan immediately slaps.  The driving intro riff and the punchy drums make me want to jump up and down as soon as this song comes on.  With a short runtime of under 3 minutes and its overly simplistic structure, the song is about as pop and as catchy as metal can get.  The verses are slightly subdued with Chino Moreno’s soft delivery but then the guitar riff kicks back in; Moreno starts hollering and his voice just soars over the track.  It’s really hard not to join in and yell along to the refrain here.  The bridge has these sharp, tremolo picked notes that continue into the last verse that adds something a little extra; keeping the song from being a little too formulaic.  The song eventually comes full circle ending once again with the refrain for a strong finish.
