MMM! We love a good Thai meal, but they are hard to find here in Manhattan. A place called “Fish Cheeks” over on Bond Street near The Bowery is doing a pretty good job of serving up some items worthy of your attention, if you like experimenting with Thai delights.
The chefs and owners are brothers who used to work at a place called ‘Nahm’ in Bangkok…Nahm has a couple of Michelin stars…so these dudes have to be pretty good, right? Eh, for the most part we will say ‘yes…but…”.
They serve Leo and Chang and Singha here…hmmm, I’ll start with a Leo. . .(these are Thai beers, btw.). . .and then we get busy with lobster things, fried fish, sauteed veggies, fried rice stuff, plus one or two other items. . .everything is tasty, but nothing has the kick that we expect from these dishes and would most certainly receive if we were dining in Bangkok or Chiang Mai or on the islands…so we are happy but overall not blown away.
The staff are lovely to us, the atmosphere is light and airy, and the food leaves us wanting. . .ah well, this is what extensive travel through Southeast Asia does to you: it makes you long to return for the real thing…we gotta get back over there NOW!
I send you better-try-next-time vibes from Fish Cheeks here in New York City…feel them…they will help you sleep through half the night tonight.
